John 4:43-54 – Healing of an Official’s son.
Importance of God’s Word…
Finishing up the end of John Chapter 4. Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well.
- Jesus had to go through Samaria… He had a divine appointment with a woman at a well.
- Jesus breaks down cultural barriers… has a conversation with her and wants to give her “Living water.”
- She tries to avoid the conversation… gets all “Spiritual with Jesus but THIS IS JESUS!
- Jesus exposes the filth she’s been drinking… He asks for her Husband.
- He reveals He’s the Messiah.
- Jesus Disciples come back, they’re puzzled as to why Jesus is talking with this Samaritan woman but they don’t say anything!
- Meanwhile the woman leaves her water pot, runs into town to tell the townspeople about Jesus! Here they come…
- And the Disciples are clueless… they’re worried about Jesus getting something to eat.
The main point from the last message was: That our Priority and Focus should be on the “Spiritual” rather than the Physical.
That doesn’t mean we neglect the Physical… it simply means we have our priorities in order and we’re focused on what matters most!
Matthew 6:31-33 NCV – 31 Don’t worry and say, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 The people who don’t know God keep trying to get these things, and your Father in heaven knows you need them. 33 Seek first God’s kingdom and what God wants. Then all your other needs will be met as well.
IF we put God first, what God wants, His Righteousness first… God will take care of all the rest! (AND, it will be so much better than what you could ever do or provide!!)
The Woman at the well was a great example of how we should respond to Jesus… How we should be “transformed” from the inside out!! And there was a GREAT HARVEST!!
John 4:39-42 NIV – 39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers. 42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
THIS WEEK: John 4:43-54 NIV – Jesus Heals an Official’s Son with just the spoken word… but it’s more than that… It’s really about a “deeper” level of Belief and Faith.
43 After the two days he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, for they also had been there.
46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” 49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”
The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed.
54 This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
They received Him, welcomed Him but they didn’t truly believe in Him as the Messiah, nor put their Faith in Him?
John 2:23-24 – Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name (in Him). (Attached themselves to Jesus as His Disciples.) 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people.
Question: What’s our motive for Believing in, putting our Faith in Jesus?
Why are we here this morning? Worship yes, but is it really to draw closer to God, to Christ… to KNOW Him better and BECOME more like Christ. (Hold that thought!)
John 4:46-54 – 46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. 48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders, ”Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
Seems like Jesus is being a little harsh… 48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders, ”Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
The Royal Official: Most likely a Sadducee, part of the Religious Leadership or part of Herod’s Court. Sadducees didn’t believe in the afterlife, angels, spirits, didn’t believe in healing… believed that whatever happened to you was fate. You got what you deserved and God is not really involved in our lives… Faith wasn’t part of their belief system or their life.
Right now he isn’t a Royal Official, a Sadducee or even a leader in Israel. He’s a Father who’s little boy is dying! He needs help and Jesus is all He’s got! It’s the only Hope he has! (It’s the only hope any of us have!)
49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down (at once) before my child dies.” 50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed.
Question: Does our motive for Believing and Faith in Jesus determine what kind of Belief and Faith we have?
- “Superficial Faith” or “Deep Faith?”
- “Situational Faith” or “Saving Faith?”
You’ve heard of Foxhole Faith right…
You’re in the heat of the battle (whatever your battle is) or in some state of emergency! Jesus if you get me out of this, or if you get me through this I’ll _______________________.
What usually happens with that “Foxhole Faith?” We revert back to our old selves, our old ways. It’s “Superficial” on the surface… it’s “Situational” based on my circumstance. I don’t really want to KNOW Jesus I just want to be “SAVED” from my circumstance!
NOTE: There are some folks who are sincere in those situations and their lives ARE changed, ARE transformed in Christ forever. I’m not saying it can’t happen.
Sometimes we treat Jesus like a “Medicine Cabinet, Spare Tire, or a Tool box.” As long at things are good, I feel good, life is good… we don’t really need Jesus
Is Jesus the Handlebars (Steering wheel) or the Spare Tire?!
Jesus is trying to draw this Official and the others from Superficial, Situational Belief & Faith into a Deep, Saving Belief & Faith!
John 4:51-54 – 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.” 53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed. 54 This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
Jesus reveals His Power… not just over the sickness but over time… space… and matter… Who but GOD could do such a thing! He doesn’t go with the man, ask what’s wrong, go see the kid… He just speaks the word! Your Son is fine. He’s alive. Go on about your business.
Jesus isn’t being hard hearted… He’s more interested in the Spiritual than the Physical! IF the boy died, Jesus could raise him from the dead!
The Official had to believe that Jesus’ word was enough… (Head)
He had to Trust Jesus at His word… (Heart)
He had to act in Faith at Jesus word. (Hands)
The next day while the Official was still on the way home… His servants meet him and share the good news!
- What time did it happen? At the very time that Jesus spoke the word!
The Official and his entire household believed and put their faith in Jesus! NOT because of what Jesus could do, but because of who He was! He’s the Messiah!
That’s where Jesus wants to take us… beyond what he can do for us to who He is! He’s’ God! He’s our Savior, God’s Sacrifice and ours so we can be restored and reconciled to God the Father!
Once again Jesus is teaching His Disciples (Teaching us) what it really means to Believe in Him and have Faith in Him. And the type of Belief ad Faith that’s required.
The Lord doesn’t want some “superficial, shallow, situational” belief and/or faith.
He wants us to have a serious, deep, substantial, real and personal Belief… a Saving Faith.
NOT because of what He can do for us, but because of who He is! He’s God! He’s the SAVIOR of the World.
